The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential is the highest regarded professional qualification in breastfeeding knowledge and support, recognised internationally. Prior to sitting the rigorous exam, candidates are often already accredited as breastfeeding counsellors, peer supporters, midwives or health visitors who have gained additional extensive and advanced training in breastfeeding and lactation issues. For example, to sit the exam, they must accrue a minimum of 1,000 hours of proven clinical experience, working with breastfeeding mothers and babies. After qualifying, IBCLC’s must recertify every five years, in order to ensure that their skills and knowledge are up to date, as well as pass the International Board’s examination every ten years to recertify.
In addition, all IBCLC’s are obliged to work according to the IBCLC Code of Professional Conduct.
EVERYONE with a baby to feed! The World Health Organization reports that “mothers and other caregivers require active support for establishing and sustaining appropriate breastfeeding practices.”
While feeding your baby is natural, it certainly isn’t always easy. An IBCLC understands that and will endeavour to support you and your needs in order for you to feel confident about meeting your feeding goals. Whether breastfeeding comes easily for you or not, having a strong support system is key to meeting your feeding goals– and no one is better prepared to offer you expert, personalized care than your IBCLC.
As a new parent, you can expect an IBCLC to assist you with all your lactation needs, for example finding the best breastfeeding position for you if your baby is struggling to latch or isn’t gaining weight properly. Your IBCLC will also support you with common lactation challenges, like low milk supply, breastfeeding pain, and common conditions like engorgement and plugged ducts.
Most importantly, your IBCLC can determine how to improve feeding sessions and your long term feeding experience.
Yes! Expecting parents are encouraged to request an IBCLC consultation before their baby arrives. During a prenatal visit, your IBCLC can set you up for feeding success: they can help you understand how to get off to a good start with breastfeeding, show you a range of breastfeeding positions, and help prepare you for your baby’s arrival.
